INFO

From Willingboro, NJ, DJ Jay Ski fell in love with hip hop in the early 80′s. The first time he heard Afrika Bambaataa’s pioneering song “Planet Rock” on Drexel University’s radio station, he was hooked. Jay Ski grew up listening to classic radio shows such as Street Beat with Lady B, Kool DJ Red Alert, and Rap Attack with Marley Marl and the late great Mr. Magic. Jay Ski traded his guitar for turntables and practiced daily on a set of Technic 1200s. He won a local DJ battle out of 25 DJs, which led to a local radio guest spot, and eventually a weekly hip hop show on Philly’s Q102 radio station in 1992. After 8 years of spinning six days a week, Jay moved on to create mixshows at a new Philadelphia station known as Wired 96.5. He took a small break from radio to focus on music production and recording with his group, Bunjii.

Jay Ski was the official tour DJ for the New Jazz Philosophy tour, featuring Busta Rhymes, The Roots, Common, Talib Kweli, Mya, The Pharcyde, EPMD, Mobb Deep, and more. Jay Ski can also be heard weekly on Monie Love’s XM radio show called “Ladies First”, as he produces and mixes on channel 65/Sirius 39 on the old school channel “Backspin”. Jay’s latest accomplishment is being the DJ for the “One World Hip Hop Championship”, in which three episodes have aired on MTV2, hosted by Philadelphia hip hop legend Parry P. Jay Ski is also a member of the Skratch Makaniks Crew, a national DJ collective founded in 2000. The vision of the Skratch Makaniks Crew is to create a true turntablist crew that can learn, teach, and create with one another, as well as sustain classic hip hop and the essence of DJing. Check out DJ Jay Ski’s mixtape with HipHopSite.com called “The Release”, featuring PackFM, Substantial, The Last Emperor, Sadat X, and iCON The Mic King.
